The Lemaze System of Childbirth Preparation
Fernand Lemaze first introduced his method of childbirth preparation
in the 70’s, similar to the teachings Dr Grantly Dick Read
formulated in 1953 it places emphasis upon breathing and the role
of the husband as coach and supporter.
It aims to decondition any fear or doubts that women have about
the birth and to respond to the sensations of labour in a relaxed
and positive way. Some classes place great emphasis on breathing
techniques but as this system has developed this aspect is not
so regimented as it was.
Lemaze is said to have evolved his teachings from the highly systematised
training centred on breathing techniques developed in the USSR
called Psychoprophylaxis. Many people have gone on to create
their own
methods of childbirth preparation based upon his original works.
The Second Nature Birth Programme IS NOT in any way assoiated with the Lamaze system of childbirth preparation.
